Position: Assistant Farmer/Apprentice

Summary: The assistant farmer/apprentices will be crucial to the success of our first season at Pearson Organics. More than anything I am looking for an employee who is looking for a long term relationship in order to learn all aspects of the management of a small vegetable farm. Timeframe: We will prioritize applicants who are able to commit to the entire season (April - November) and beyond. Employees are also encouraged to return to the farm for multiple seasons of employment.

Job Description: ​Assistant farmers will participate in all aspects of the farm's daily operations. This position is best suited for someone who is interested in a career in sustainable vegetable production - owning your own farm or managing a farm. While this position is true to the apprenticeship model, a high level of responsibility will be given to the employee, hence the assistant farmer title. You will receive detailed training in all aspects of small scale vegetable farming. This includes, but is not limited to:

basic construction projects
-
land and bed preparation
-
seedling production: filling trays and seeding trays, watering, potting up, greenhouse climate and water management, etc.

transplanting
-
harvest: baby greens crops, roots, tomatoes/peppers, etc.

washing and packing produce
-
CSA distribution: be present for CSA pick up and help members pack their shares

irrigation management
-
tractor operation - tillage, weed control, basic maintenance, etc.
Schedule:
-
April & May: M-F 7AM - 4PM with 1 hour for lunch, rotating weekend greenhouse watering duties

June - October M, W, Th 7AM - 4PM with 1 hour for lunch

T & F 6AM - ​5PM with 1 hour for breakfast & 1 hour for lunch

Requirements:
-
positive attitude and willingness to learn
-
desire to work outside (in all types of conditions)

able to perform difficult tasks including lifting 50 pounds, keeping hands in cold water for hours while washing produce, and working in uncomfortable positions (weeding for many hours in a row)

able to follow established systems while being flexible when things change

previous experience on small scale vegetable farms highly preferred

Compensation: Weekly stipend of $250/week. 1 week paid time off. Workers compensation. Housing is not included.
