We are hiring for the 2020 season! (two position available, keep on scrolling!)

Position: Full Season, Full-Time Crew Member

Summary: Pearson Organics, LLC is a family farm serving Rochester, the Twin Cities metro, and in between through vegetable Community Supported Agriculture shares, farmers markets, restaurant partnerships, and more. Full season, full-time crew members will be crucial to the success of the upcoming season at Pearson Organics. The farm is undergoing a transition from leased to purchased land, and growing to meet local demand for high quality fresh vegetables. There are significant opportunities for hands on learning about all aspects of managing a small but growing vegetable farm.

Timeframe: We will prioritize applicants who are able to commit to the entire season (April - November) and beyond. Employees are also encouraged to return to the farm for multiple seasons of employment, and we are continuously looking for ways to lengthen our growing and employment season.

Job Description: ​

Crew members will participate in all aspects of the farm's daily operations.  This position is best suited for someone who is interested in a career in sustainable vegetable production - owning your own farm or managing a farm.  While this is an hourly position, there will be many aspects of the job that mimic an apprenticeship model, a high level of training and responsibility will be given to each crew member.  You will receive detailed training in all aspects of small scale vegetable farming.  This includes, but is not limited to:

  • basic construction projects

  • soil and bed preparation

  • seedling production

  • transplanting

  • harvest: baby greens crops, roots, tomatoes/peppers, etc.

  • washing and packing produce for CSA and wholesale markets

  • CSA distribution: be present for CSA pick up and help members pack their shares

  • marketing channels: CSA, farmers market, and wholesale

  • irrigation management

  • tractor operation - safe use, tillage, basic implement operation

 

Schedule:

  • April & November

    • Monday - Friday: 8 AM - 4 PM with half an hour unpaid lunch break​

  • May - October

    • Monday-Friday: 6:30 AM - 4 PM with half an hour unpaid lunch break

  • This schedule is subject to seasonal variation

Requirements:

  • positive attitude and willingness to learn

  • desire to work outside (in all types of conditions)

  • able to perform difficult tasks including lifting 50 pounds, keeping hands in cold water for hours while washing produce, and working in uncomfortable positions (weeding, transplanting, harvesting for many hours)

  • able to follow established systems while being flexible when things change

  • ability to work retain instructions and work independently

  • have any eye for quality and detail

  • previous experience on small scale vegetable farms highly preferred

Compensation: Starting wage of $10.50/hr. This depends on experience and could be more for the right candidate!  3 days paid vacation. Workers compensation. Farm vegetables (& lots of them). Friendship. Knowledge.

Job Description: ​

The Pack Shed Coordinator/Farmers Market Lead is best suited for someone who has spent a season or two working on a vegetable farm and wants to step up their game with more responsibility.  This position will work with the Field Manager and Owners to ensure a high quality and clean product is going into storage and packed correctly for our orders.  As we market our produce through a variety of channels, a high level of organization is needed, and applicants should have the ability to see the big picture while maintaining an eye for detail.​  This person will also be responsible for working Sunday Farmers Market in the Twin Cities (exact market TBD).  While the main focus of this position is harvest and post-harvest, there will be plenty of time for working in other aspects of production which may include, but is not limited to:

  • Greenhouse work and watering

  • Transplanting

  • Weeding and hand cultivation

  • Row cover management :)

  • Basic construction projects

  • Tomato trellising

  • Etc....

Schedule:

  • Monday-Thursday: 6:30 AM - 2:30 PM with half an hour unpaid lunch break

  • Sunday: Farmers Market: 5 AM - 3 PM

  • This schedule is subject to slight seasonal variation

Requirements:

  • current driver's license with no violations in past 12 months

  • positive and customer focused attitude

  • desire to work outside (in all types of conditions)

  • good mental math skills for the farmers market

  • basic knowledge of spreadsheet usage

  • able to perform difficult tasks including lifting 50 pounds, keeping hands in cold water for hours while washing produce, and working in uncomfortable positions (weeding, transplanting, harvesting for many hours)

  • able to follow established systems while being flexible when things change

  • ability to work retain instructions and work independently

  • have any eye for quality and detail

  • previous experience on small scale vegetable farms highly preferred
